The philosophy behind Calicen
The Water Pump Principle
That is the most important idea in Calicen, and the idea that makes the protocol unlike anything else. Life does preserve itself by staying in constant motion, chasing homeostasis. It never stands still, and the moment it does, life starts to deteriorate. The Calicen Protocol embraces this natural rhythm of nature, and does something that nobody else does. We seek to harvest the benefits of change, represented by this Water Pump. Instead of trying to optimize for a perfect steady state, as so many others have tried and failed, we take advantage of the fact that everything in life thrives through change.
Let me show you how Calicen turns that principle into a physical, practical rhythm for living a long, healthy life—and using that health to live more.

The central lifestyle claim
homeostasis
kills.
Our body always chases homeostasis, which is the body's desired balance what it considers healthy. So chasing homeostasis is a good thing. That internal regulation keeps all of us alive. Any external well-intentioned health stimulus, that we give ourself, moves that balance and the body chases again homestatis. And by doing so it will always overcompensate which is what keeps us healthy.
As long as the over-compensation is higher then the natural detoriation of health, we stay young. The problem begins when the body reaches homestatis and we stopped stimulating it. Then ironically, homeosatis kills. Homeostasis means zero incentive for healing and overcompensation we accumulate damaged cell.
Escape Homeostasis.
Pulling & Pushing
The difficulty is staying in a "stimulus"-state. To harvest 365 days the benefits is the goal. Unfortunately, most people most of time just sit here. In the middle range, where nothing positive happens.
This wide band, is where you stay in homeostasis:
detoriation > recycling
In the zero-stimulus-state.
Everything adapts. Even your good intentions.
Paradox of a well intentioned stimulus
Let's be clear. If you train, any training. If you fast, any kind of fasting, if you eat clean any type of clean eating. Congratulation, this is a great start.
The goal is to stay in a health-stimulus context. Always. Just... unfortunately, you may sometimes fail. You still deterioate. You still fall behind. Because there is this one missing "value" you still have to acquire. The value of change itself. And your good intentions (in the gym maybe?) are admirable, just lacking the element of change. Paradoxically, as you focus on (let's say gaym training) on your weight lifting, day in day out, you are falling in the same trap like everybody else. You keep work with the same stimulus every day. Are you getting a stimulus? Yes you are, congrats. Are you getting all the stimulus you could get? Paradoxically, I can tell you, you lack most of the stimulus and benefits. You created a homeostasis around a constant "growth"-stimulus.
Change itself has value.
Let me explain the metaphor
Why the water pump?
Have you ever seen a old-school doble-acting water pump? They are actually a beautiful piece of engineering. Specially because water flows in either direction. When you push water flows, when you pull water flows. So any motion will always result in water flow.
In this metahphor: Water is life. Water is life force. Water is the body's ability to improve beyond natural detoriation.
Now, imagine you are constantly pumping. (Pumping using the handle is representative of a lifestyle intervention). Up and down. Pull and push. Pull and push. The water flows. And at some point you decide to keep pushing. What will happen? You hit a physical hard stop of the water pump. You pushed all the way down. What happens to the water? It stops flowing. And what happens if I push harder? Well, nothing. Additional force will never make it flow. You can push 10 times harder and zero flow will happen. So what do you do? Yes, you start the reversal, the change of direction. Water flows agian.
Now to the oposit, at some point after pumping up and down. Pull and push. At some point you just keep pulling? What will happen? You guessed it right, you hit the hard stop again. And additional force will never deliver water flow. Even more dangerous, you might apply so much force that you damage the pump.
This is us in life. By ignoring the fact that any intervention (handle) has a natural limit, and that pushing beyond that limit can cause harm, we often find ourselves facing the consequences of our actions. Your coach asking for more discipline after adaptation happened, is the coach trying to overcome a hard stop of your natural rythm.
Let's accept the fact that any intervention, our body, our health follow natural limits and rythms which must be respected for optimal benefits.
The handle
The intervention itself: any direct or indirect signal sent to the body.
The hard stop
The point where adaptation makes more of the same less useful—or turns excess into damage.
The water
Biological health. Vitality. The capacity that lets life continue and lets you use it.
The reversal
A deliberate change of signal that restores sensitivity and opens a different path to benefit.
Full flow capcity is only reached when:
- full force applied onto the handle
- reversal before hard stop reached
Remember water pump metaphor, through those 2 simple rules. Apply it your life. Calicen applies it to it's health protocol to swing, vibe, osciliate, pump into health worthy to become a centenarian.
Johnny Johnson's hammer problem
"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."
Time and time again. A person learns something new. Something that is genuinly good, great and effective. Let's say as example our friend Johnny Johnson found out that glycine is useful for many important bodily function, including sleep quality. So now John, who learned of its benefits by taking 3g is so in awe, he falls pretty much in love with glycine. And from now on Glycine in his "hammer", and as a fanbody he will always try to fix anyting else (nails) with glycine. So he start ot raise the dose, to the point he consumed 10 times more glycine with the end result of having a 2-fold benefit improvment. He fully over-compensated.
What Johnny Johnson lacked was the understanding that there are more tools in his tool belt, better suited for other tasks. And that his effort intelligently divided between several tools would have rendered more benefit than the monstrous doses of one single intervention. Imagine Johnny trying to cut a cucumber using a hammer.
Calicen does understand this really well. Using and combining different tools obtain larger benefits then single interventions could ever achieve. Which in part is understanding that something require "Purging" for certain benefits and certain things requrei "growth". So that alternating between different states, interventions, diets and exercises we harvest in the long run more then any single one.
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Each direction improves the next
Reciprocal amplification
The cycle is not a flat sine wave that endlessly returns to the same baseline. Each completed and properly recovered cycle is intended to improve the starting conditions of the next.
Pull makes growth more productive.
Clearance makes space. Lower inflammation protects what is built later. Renewed sensitivity to calories, insulin and growth signals lets a smaller rebuilding signal do more work. The body leaves pull hungry for material and prepared to use it.
Push makes the next pull more capable.
New tissue produces enzymes, proteins, lipids and hormones required for cellular function and repair. Muscle stores fuel and handles glucose. Restored energy, strength and drive make the next restrictive phase easier to sustain.
Usable biological capacity
Benefit available from each phase
This is directional, not a claim that every cycle literally doubles a result. The increase may be large or small. The point is that one mesocycle lays biological ground the next can use.
Begin with something familiar
Have you ever done a diet?
How did it go?
Let me guess. The first few weeks felt awesome. Maybe even life-changing. You found the answer. Your energy changed. The scale moved. Your mind sharpened. You told people this was the greatest thing you had ever tried.
Then, a few weeks later, it still worked... just less. Later still, the effect became difficult to notice. Eventually you stopped.
“This changes everything.”
“It still works, I think.”
“Why do I barely feel it?”
“I guess it stopped working.”
Was it the wrong diet? Surprise: Your body adapted.
The same pattern appears in fasting, lifting, cardio, calorie restriction, supplements, breathwork and nearly every other health intervention. A useful signal enters the body. The body answers. Then the new condition becomes familiar. What once demanded adaptation was actually answered by the body, it did adapt, and the new level became your new status quo.
And then because you know nothing else to do, or your coach tells you to hit the same regimen even harder. Most lifestyle systems respond by asking for more discipline, more duration or more force. Brutal it can be, trying to compensate the lacking stimulus of a already adapted lifestyle. Your fighting then against nature itself, good luck.
Calicen asks a different question:
What if the answer is:
change direction together with changed adaptation?
One pump. Two forms of flow.
Pull and push are
equally valuable.
Calicen changes the name with the context because each pair reveals a different part of the same idea.
Pull
Purge · Liberate · Clean
Make space.
Pull reduces incoming energy and growth signals. It asks the body to become economical, sensitive and selective—to turn inward, use stored resources and clear what no longer serves.
- ● Freedom from constant intake
- ● Metabolic sensitivity
- ● Clearance and focus
- ● Space for what comes next
Push
Grow · Rebuild · Restore
Fill it with the new.
Push supplies energy, amino acids and progressive mechanical demand. It asks the body to build structure, restore reserves and expand the capacity available for the next challenge.
- ● Strength and structure
- ● Energy and renewed drive
- ● Tissue growth and repair
- ● Capacity for the next pull
Why pull comes first
The new sofa cannot enter while the old sofa still occupies the room.
That is the order of the pump: clear before rebuilding. Pull removes what fills the room, lowers the old signal and creates the conditions in which new material has somewhere useful to go.
For a generally healthy person, Calicen starts at week 1. A severely undermuscled or depleted person may strategically enter at week 10 and build the capacity needed to perform the pull well. That is not an exception. It is choosing the right entry point into the same circle.
Harmonic architecture
Waves live inside waves.
The 17-week cycle is only the largest visible rhythm. Smaller oscillations overlap it. Like sets of ocean waves, they reinforce the larger direction while keeping the body responsive at every scale.
The week breathes out
Start hard. Finish soft.
Every normal week opens with intensity and releases it gradually. The exercise emphasis changes by block—cardio dominates early pull, hypertrophy dominates late push—but the weekly wave remains.
- MonNorwegian 4×4 HIIT + abs
- TueFull-body weights
- WedBlock-specific work
- ThuBlock-specific work
- FriBlock-specific work
- SatVILPAs + recovery
- SunVILPAs + stillness
Week nine is the exception: high-intensity cardio is replaced by Zones 2 and 3 so demand matches the fuel available.
The 24-hour wave
From output to stillness.
Timing can move. Adherence matters more than perfect spacing. What matters is the direction: concentrated output early, two brief activity injections between meals, then progressively calmer practices toward sleep.
The origin
A pump in my kitchen.
The moment everything clicked.
Around 2018, I kept finding two stories about protein that seemed impossible to reconcile. More protein supported strength and longer life. Protein restriction also appeared to extend healthy life. I believed both. The missing piece had to be context.
I was thinking about senescent cells. I wanted the clearance associated with restriction, and I wanted protein to build muscle. Both goals mattered. They simply belonged at different moments.
Then, in my kitchen, I looked at the manual pump on my water dispenser. Pull the handle and water flows. Push it and water flows. Keep changing direction and it keeps coming.
Then it clicked.
Pull until the handle hits the top and the flow stops. Extra pulling leaves it there. Push until it reaches the bottom and the same thing happens. Extra force leaves the water still. The handle has to change direction.
That simple pump gave me the answer. Restriction and growth were two directions of the same cycle. Each became powerful in its own time.
In that moment, everything clicked. Progress came from changing direction at the right time.
A pattern larger than Calicen
Nature is our great teacher.
It preserves life by moving between opposing states. Progress, survival, and adaptation emerge from this oscillation. The deep understanding that well sequenced cycles are essential, is embedded in nature.
Heartbeat
Contraction and release create every beat.
Breathing
Inhale and exhale. Neither side can become a permanent state.
Feeding / fasting
Taking in material, then stopping intake so it can be processed.
Day / night
Activity and repair. Light and darkness. Wakefulness and sleep.
Seasons
Growth, harvest, scarcity and renewal—each state preparing conditions for another.
Ocean waves
Small waves arrive inside larger sets: several low, then several intense. Even ocean waves breathe in waves.
The 17-week Calicen Protocol
The philosophy is already baked in.
The Water Pump Principle is not left here as an idea. Calicen turns it into seventeen ready-made weeks of food, fasting, training, VILPAs, recovery, mental practice and phase-matched supplementation.
It was made for all of us who want to reach one hundred still strong, capable, social, sexual, curious and unmistakably alive.
Open the complete Calicen ProtocolA Calicen language choice
What Calicen means by “a VILPA.”
In research, VILPA describes a lifestyle pattern: vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity. Short actions scattered through ordinary life raise heart rate and breathing without becoming a formal workout.
Calicen deliberately uses the phrase “a VILPA” for one of those short activity injections. Technically, the movement itself might be called an exercise snack. Practically, the Calicen phrasing is clearer because it names the purpose, not the exercise.
A VILPA can be stairs, rapid squats, jumping, a short sprint, fast dancing or any safe action that raises the heart rate and may bring on a sweat. The specific movement matters less than its job: interrupt the inactive baseline with a brief, vigorous signal.
Calicen targets two per day, spread roughly between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner. The morning workout is a separate activity pulse and is not counted as a VILPA.
She is not healthy because she trained in a gym she has never seen. Her village gives her a hill. Her groceries give her a load. Ordinary life gives her short bursts of intensity, day after day.
The five Calicen pillars in motion
The whole context changes together.
The body is usually best at making recycling dominant or making growth dominant—not maximizing both at once. Calicen aligns the pillars so they deliver one coherent assignment, then changes the assignment.
01
Nutrition
Pull: eating windows narrow; calories, carbohydrates and protein progressively fall; food moves from ovo-pescatarian to vegan ketogenic and finally to fasting.
Push: protein returns first, then a wider amino-acid range, then a temporary surplus and celebratory challenge.
02
Exercise + VILPAs
Pull: cardio capacity is emphasized while resistance work protects strength. The fasting week lowers intensity.
Push: hypertrophy progressively dominates while cardio preserves the engine that supports muscle growth. Two VILPAs keep every day alive.
03
Meditation, breathwork + yoga
Pull: breathwork and meditation train the opposite end of high cardio—the capacity to deliberately lower arousal and heart rate.
Push: yoga balances lifting, preserves movement and prevents newly gained strength from becoming stiffness.
04
Supplements
Steady support: foundational vitamins, minerals and selected compounds keep raw materials available while diet and demand change.
Phase support: Vegan Protein+ belongs to weeks 10–17; Senolytics Stack+ alternates in weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 16.
05
Human connection
The young centenarian is not a laboratory sample. Calicen pairs biological ambition with low chronic stress, frequent movement, social contact, laughter and enjoyment.
Connection has its own oscillations—company and solitude, focus and play, engagement and rest. This page names the pillar; it deserves its own deeper article.
Support, not the main signal
Supplements help the body answer.
They do not replace the pump. Their job is to keep raw materials available and support the work emphasized in each phase.
The destination
Centenarian
Health is not the final goal.
Health is the vehicle.
Calicen aims at the biological health of today’s centenarian when that person was twenty—and at the way of living that makes those extra years worth having. A capable body. A calm mind. Frequent movement. Low chronic stress. Friends. Laughter. Desire. Experience.
In the Calicen philosophy, every organism—and every cell inside it—is ultimately trying to continue under conditions in which it can function well. For a human, that means building a life capable of sustained pleasure: joy, play, sex, focus, relationships, curiosity and the simple feeling that existence is good.
Longevity without life is a poor bargain. Biomarkers, strength and metabolic health are resources, just as money is a resource. Money is not the experience. Health is not the experience. Both matter because of what they allow.
The day the metaphor became physicalI found the old pump in an antique shop and brought it home.
“The results I see in my own life are impossible to ignore.”
I run more.
I dance more.
I stay focused longer.
I do not merely feel healthier.
I live more.
