Elliptical Z2
Elliptical Z2 is a cross-trainer cardio format organized around 60–70% HRmax and an RPE of 2–3/10; full sentences. Zone 2 targets aerobic base and sustainable health-oriented volume. Use heart rate together with perceived effort and the talk test because zone estimates vary between people.

Why this exercise matters
Elliptical Z2 is the strongest all-round choice for accumulating aerobic work comfortably and repeatedly.
- Long-term heart health — Builds endurance and supports healthier heart-and-artery function when practiced regularly over time.
- Fat-oxidation support — A long, steady session uses a relatively high proportion of fat for fuel and adds meaningful energy expenditure; fat loss still depends on total energy balance.
- Lower impact — Offers substantial cardio volume without repeated foot strikes, often making it easier to tolerate than an equally long jog.
- Recovery compatible — Usually interferes less with strength training than harder intervals while still producing useful endurance work.
How to perform
Use 30–60 min steady; for interval zones, include the listed easy recoveries. Effort should feel deliberately restrained.
- Warm-up — Begin with 5–10 minutes below the target zone and increase gradually.
- Enter the zone — Adjust pace and, when available, resistance or incline until effort matches 2–3/10.
- Technique — Keep the whole foot on each pedal, posture tall, and cadence smooth.
- Monitor — Check heart rate, breathing, and the talk test instead of following one number blindly.
- Cool-down — Finish with 5 minutes of easy movement and allow breathing to settle.
What to avoid
Heart-rate zones are estimates, and the same pace can produce different responses with heat, fatigue, stress, medication, hills, or dehydration.
- Zone mismatch — Slow down if breathing and RPE are harder than the displayed zone suggests.
- Impact/load — Keep resistance low enough that the stride remains smooth and joint-comfortable.
- Effective duration — Z2 needs more accumulated time than higher-zone work; very short bouts function mostly as warm-up, so build toward roughly 30–60 continuous minutes when appropriate.
